French Polishing is the art of covering wood with glossy layers of shellac dissolved in a solution of denatured alcohol.
Shellac is an animal product, which comes from an insect after it has feed on certain types of trees grown in India and Southern Asia.
Having Sheridan and his team French Polishing an item sees the beauty, distinction and figure of various timbers being brought out and shown to their best advantage or, brought back to life.
The French Polishing process is lengthy and repetitive with the finish being obtained by a combination of different rubbing motions. The thin coats of shellac are built up using a "rubber" or pad of wadding wrapped in cotton. The resultant glossy surface may be left as it is or dulled off and waxed to give a pleasant hand finished satin finish.
